cheap audio interfaces

Best Cheap Audio Interfaces For Less Than $200 in 2018

cheap audio interfaces

In every music production process, the presence of an audio interface is a necessity. Audio interfaces take the music we play and turn it into a digital audio that can be heard by anyone with a digital device (a computer for example). So if you’re willing to setup a home recording studio, you’ll definitely need to have a powerful audio interface.

In this guide you’ll get to discover three of the best cheap audio interfaces that you can buy for less than 200 bucks. Yeah, you heard me right. And I’m not talking about those toys, but powerful audio interfaces that are no less than the ones other people buy for over $500.

Purchasing an audio interface is usually difficult especially for beginners who are just starting their way into music production. There are hundreds of audio interfaces out there in the market. They come with dozens of different features and multiple ports that can make anyone overwhelmed and confused.

The worst thing I’ve encountered with audio interfaces in my beginnings are the overly sophisticated terms that the salesman keep throwing at me like I’m supposed to understand them. It was a nightmare. Luckily for me, I called a friend of mine who is an experienced music producer to help me pick the ideal audio interface for me. So, don’t worry my friend. I’ll try in this detailed guide to help you, just like my friend did a few years ago, get through this with the perfect choice for your home studio.

The structure of this guide will be divided into two parts. The first part in which I’ll try explaining some essential terms and definitions that you need to know. Nothing complicated but a few hints to help you understand what this is all about. The second part will be a quick review of the best three audio interfaces that anyone can get for less than $200. Keep reading!

Things You Need To Know About Audio Interfaces

If you already understand the elements that are related to audio interfaces, you can skip this part and go directly to the second part in which I outline the best cheap audio interfaces in the market.

Otherwise, I highly recommend that you continue reading thoroughly the components of this first part. I know it can be a little bit difficult for some of you to grasp all these news terms. But, remember that your goal is to become a music producer and there’s no way you can do that if you didn’t get familiar with the following differences and terms.

Why The Audio Interface Is That Important

You may argue that your computer has already a sound card built in that can be used to transform my sound playing on my guitar to the computer. and that’s it. Why do I need to buy this audio interface anyway ?

This is a legitimate question. But, what you don’t probably know is that the sound card on your computer isn’t meant for recording music. It has a limited connectivity and bad quality when it comes to music production. A consumer-grade sound card doesn’t give you all the details of your recorded sound and it doesn’t give you enough possibilities when it comes to editing and mixing music. Besides, your computer doesn’t have the inputs and outputs connections necessary. For example, XLR input for the mic or outputs for headphones to monitor your recordings.

Long story short, you NEED to have an audio interface. There’s no way around it.

Interface/Computer Connectors

Audio interfaces come with different connection types that can be compatibles with some devices while other devices aren’t compatibles. So, this is a crucial point that you need to pay attention to. Here are the four types of connections that are the most common:

Almost all the computers (both MAC and PC) come with USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports. So, if you choose to buy an usb audion interface, you won’t find any trouble connecting it with your computer. It has a good data transfer rate that can handle all of your recordings.

usb port

It offers a good data transfer rate too. But with the development of USB connections, this type of connection are starting to disappear from the market. Firewire is usually seen only on Macs.

It became recently a very popular connection port that offers an excellent transfer rate. All the newest Macs have this type of port. it can be also used on PCs. Check out the list of computers that support Thnuderbolt ports.

It’s an internal card-based computer connection that is largely used on desktop computers. It’s always been the standard connection for professional producers for so many years now. It has an extremely fast data transfer.

Takeaway: All of these connection types are adequate to a home recording studio. So, don’t waste most of your time debating which one is the best because all of them are good and will do the work.

How Many Input/Output Do You Need

One of the important things that you need to consider while buying an audio interface is the number of inputs/outputs it contains. You should know how many input/output do you need before even looking for a good audio interface. The number depends on how many tracks you intend to monitor/record at the same time. In other words, it depends on what you’re willing to do. Take a look at this table below to understand what I’m talking about:

Number of Input/Output depending on your work nature
Work nature Number of Input/Output needed
Singer/Songwriter/Solo music producer 2 to 4
Small group of singers/musicians 4 to 8
A group of music producers more than 16

IMPORTANT: You should pay attention not only to the number of input channels but also to their type. there are mic inputs that allow you to connect your microphone directly.  And this without needing an outboard mic preamplifier which can be connected to a line input (which means additional cost of a mic preamplifier). A microphone preamplifier is a sound engineering device that make the sound of the mic powerful and of a adequate quality.

So, it’s much better that an audio interface has a lot of mic inputs.

There are other inputs that you should pay attention to. For example, DI inputs if you’re intending to play guitar/bass and MIDI inputs if wanna use a keyboard/MIDI controller.

Best Cheap Audio Interfaces For Less Than $200

The reason I wanted to create this guide about cheap audio interfaces is that I’m aware that many of beginners who are just starting out with music production don’t have $1000 budget. Even if they have the financial capacity of spending that much, they’re not sure of how things will turn out for them in music production. And that’s totally normal. It’s kind of foolish to spend a thousand dollars on something I just realized I wanna get into it a few days back.

So, I made this list for you guys. You’ll find below 3 amazing audio interfaces that I believe to be the best in the market at this moment.

PreSonus AudioBox USB 2×2 – For Less Than $100

cheap audio interface

This is like the classic recommendation that any music producer would give to a beginner with a tight budget. You probably have heard of Presonus AudioBox already in some other review before getting to this page. Actually, it makes sense. It’s a powerful audio interface with an excellent price-quality relation.

PreSonus AudioBox is perfect for starting beat makers who rely most of the time on their computer. Besides, I can say that this is the one to go with for podcasters. It comes with USB connections and it’s compatibles with most of Macs and PCs computers.

Which One Is The Best For Me?

As you may have noticed, the features of all of these three audio interfaces are pretty much the same. Except for some nuances that don’t really have any impact on the user experience. So, feel free to choose whatever you find yourself comfortable with.

However, I do believe that the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is the best choice if we took into consideration that it has over 700 reviews on Amazon and most of them are positive (rating of 4.5/5).

But, as I already said anything from the list below will do the work. Feel free to ask me anything that comes up to your mind in the comments section below. Good Luck!

Best Beat Making Software For Beginners in 2018

There’s an ongoing debate in beat making forums about which is the best beat making software ever. I’ve seen hundreds of discussions on this subject and I’ve noticed one thing in common. Everybody seems to be defending the beat maker they’re using. Why is that?

It’s simply because every beat making software needs a certain amount of time to master it. If you get to that, you will be able to make any kind of beats that you want. This means that there is not ONE BEST music maker software.

Well, that’s from a perspective of someone who’s been in beat making for a while.

So what about the beginners who are just starting out?

In this case, I’ll argue that there’s actually some beat making programs that are easier to start with than others. That’s just the way it is.

That’s what will I be covering in this post. I understand that you’re in front of a tough decision. It’s actually the toughest decision a beat making beginner will have to face in his early days. But, don’t worry because you came to the right place.

As a Beginner, What You Should Look For in a Beat Making Software

I do believe that the best beat maker for a beginner isn’t necessarily the same as for an average or advanced music producer. It’s insane to recommend a beat making software to a beginner based just on how powerful or sophisticated the software is.

I get it that having many useful functionalities in a software is very important because they give you so much more freedom to play with your instruments and create creative beats. However, for a beginner, there are some things that are far important than that.

For instance, the simplicity of the software’s panel is extremely important. You should choose a software with a user friendly interface which doesn’t get you overwhelmed and frustrated.

You will need Free Online Tutorials

Also, free tutorials included with the software are important. A powerful beat maker that doesn’t offer you free tutorials or doesn’t have so many tutorials available in the internet is usually a bad choice for beginners. That’s a point that you need to take seriously when choosing a beat maker.

A beginner is more price sensitive than an experienced beat maker. A beginner is still not sure if this beat making thins is going to take off. He’s not even sure if he’s going to even like making beats. That’s why I always recommend beginners not to spend more than they can recover from in the beginning.

In addition, a software that offers free sound samples is worth considering if it’s compatible with the things mentioned above.

These are some of the points that you should give importance to before making your purchasing decision. Now, let’s move to talk about my recommended beat making programs which I consider to be the best options for a total beginner.

Best Beat Making Programs For Beginners In 2018

1. BTV SOLO – A Software that is designed especially for beginners

beat making software btv solo

This a very special beat making software that deserves to be on top of this list for a very good reason. BTV SOLO is certainly not the most powerful software out there nor the best.

However, it’s with no doubt the easiest beat maker in the market. It has the most straightforward interface I’ve ever seen. It’s simple, easy to use and powerful enough for most purposes that a beginner would need in his first months of beat making.

Personally, BTV SOLO was the software in which I learned the basic beat making techniques. My first ever decent beats came out from this magnificent software. Let me tell you more about my first days in beat making.

It was about four years ago when I first started doing beat making. At the beginning, I had no clue where or how to start. All I was sure of is that I wanna make some good music.

So, I started searching on Google on how to start making beats. There was not a lot of information that explains exactly how to start. Nevertheless, I stumbled upon FL Studio that everybody was talking about back then. Therefore, I purchased it.

I was really excited that I will finally make some beats. But, all of my enthusiasm suddenly faded away after more than two weeks of me trying to figure out how can I make a beat with this thing called FL Studio. I failed. And I was frustrated that even online tutorials couldn’t helped me.

I said to myself ‘that’s it. I’m fed up with this’. So, I decided to let go of the idea of learning beat making. Two months later, a friend of mine told me about BTV SOLO. So, I looked it up. Even though this time I wasn’t excited like before, I decided to give it a shot.

I was impressed by how easy and straightforward it is. It’s the software that gave me hope that I can succeed in music production. It’s the software I learned the basic of arranging, mixing and mastering beats. However, I had to switch later to more advanced beat makers when I needed some features that BTV SOLO doesn’t provide.

Bottom line

  • If you have never used a beat making software before, BTV SOLO is exactly what you need. It will help you learn the basics of beat making without much of headaches.
  • If you have used an another software and you found it very difficult to use, then BTV SOLO is going to boost your learning curve effortlessly.

Main features & facts

  • It is made by the 2 Grammy awards Dallas Austin
  • Powerful features that are easy to get access to and easy to manipulate
  • It supports Midi keyboard controllers
  • A 24/7 fast support team to answer your questions
  • HD tutorial videos that explain everything about the software are included for free
  • Hundreds of presets and instruments included for free with the software
  • You get to receive any upcoming update without paying any extra money
  • A very affordable price that is way below the other beat making programs
  • It’s the best user-friendly software made especially for beginners

If you wanna know more about the features of BTV SOLO, you can check out my detailed review by clicking here.

2. FL STUDIO – The Beat Making Software That Everybody knows about

fl studio 12 review

Fl studio is without any doubt the most popular beat making software in the world. It’s one of the programs that first succeeded to offer an easy to use interface that even beginners can be able to use it. That’s mainly why it was so popular in the last fifteen years.

The last version of this software is the FL Studio 12 which was released in April of 2015. Not many people appreciated this new version because of some problems especially in the Fruity edition. It’s the edition that is made for beginners. It comes with basic features and more advanced editions such as Producer and Signature come with more additional features, instruments and effects.

The advanced editions are well appreciated by their users but the Fruity edition proves to be not as good as previous editions.

For a beginner, the problem here is that advanced editions aren’t a good investment because they have some features that you won’t even understand and will just make you more confused.

So, logically, you should get yourself a Fruity edition which has all the basic elements that you’ll need to make good beats and more importantly to learn the foundation techniques of professional beat making.

But, again, there’s the problem that Fruity edition has some functionality problems that may make your user experience a nightmare. You certainly don’t want that especially at this fragile stage when you’re still trying to figure things out.

That’s why I think I can give you a better plan that will ensure you succeed on beat making. It’s pretty much what I did in my early years.

Here’s what I recommend you to do

Since you’re still a beginner, you should first purchase BTV SOLO to learn the very basic techniques of beat making. After a few months or so of using it, you’ll start to feel that you need more features and effects. Then, you move to a more advanced beat maker and I totally recommend the Producer edition of FL Studio 12.

I think this plan minimizes the chances of getting stuck and feeling that beat making is too hard for you. I think you should totally consider it. At least it worked for me. That’s why I’m sharing it with you.

Now let’s get down to the main features of FL Studio Producer since it’s what I recommend the most.

  • So many useful features of mixing, arranging and endless effects that is hard to right all of them here in this article.
  • A great user interface that is well organized and easy to use.
  • Thousands of high quality sound samples and loops included with the software.
  • Lifetime free updates. You won’t pay to have new updates.
  • A good support that you can call them or chat with them online.
  • There are hundreds of free tutorials for FL Studio either on their official Youtube channel or from other music producers.
  • It supports Midi keyboard controllers.

If you wanna read more information about this program, you’re welcome to read my full review that I wrote a few months ago here: FL Studio Review

3. Cubase Elements – A Software That Proves To Be Reliable

cubase 8 beat maker

Another well known music production software is the Cubase Elements that I should talk about in this post. A lot of users are happy using this particular software to create awesome beats. It’s certainly one of the most successful DAWs in the last years.

Their latest version of the program is Cubase Elements 8 which is pretty much similar to the previous version in everything except that the new version comes with a better user interface.

There are more advanced editions (just like FL Studio) of this program such as Cubase Artist and Cubase Pro. They obviously offer more advanced features and a bigger package of loops and instruments.

Cubase creators claim that this software is the most complete DAW since it can be used through the whole process of composing, recording, editing and mixing and mastering.

Main features of Cubase 8 Elements

Here’s a list:

  • A tricky user interface that it’s hard to get used to it at the beginning.
  • Recording and mixing features that can go up to 48 audio and 64 MIDI tracks.
  • Editing features are quite powerful and easy to use.
  • 3 virtual instruments with more than 1000 presets.
  • Hundreds of well-engineered free sound samples
  • It supports all common audio formats.
  • Over 30 minutes of HD Video Tutorials.
  • Affordable price

Bottom line, Cubase 8 is really a powerful beat maker that can do the work for most of the time. However, I do believe that it’s somehow more complicated to use especially for beginners. But, once you do master it, it’s totally worth it.

FL Studio or Cubase ? I’ll certainly go with FL Studio since there’s a lot of free online tutorials available in the internet 10X more than Cubase. I think that’s maybe one of the reasons that a lot of us find it a little bit more difficult to use than FL Studio.

You can read my detailed review of Cubase Elements here: Read full Cubase 8 review

4. Propellerhead Reason – A Beat Maker That You Should Know About

reason 8 beat making software

That’s another good beat maker that is well respected in the music production community. This software is a workstation that contains a mixer, sequencer, rack and a browser that stores all sound samples within the program. The browser function was introduced in Reason 8 and it wasn’t in the previous version.

Reason 8 has a not-so-good interface (compared to other programs) that is considered to be one of the major cons of this software. The interface of Reason 8 is certainly way better than previous versions. However, it still not as user friendly as other programs.

Reason 8 supports many hardware instruments and comes with seven plugins and six virtual instruments that give you so much freedom to make creative beats from scratch. There’s also a large library of loops and instruments patches.

Just like most programs, Propellerhead Reason comes with 2 editions: Reason and Reason Essentials.

Propellerhead Reason is the complete edition that has more effects, more plugins and more instruments. Reason Essentials is pretty much the same but comes with less features. The latter is more than enough for a beginner who’s making his first steps in music production.

Propellerhead Reason 8 Features

To give you a general idea about Reason 8, here are the main features:

  • So many amazing instruments and powerful plugins
  • MultiTrack Sequencer with high precision audio tools.
  • Unlimited audio and instruments tracks.
  • Advanced Export options
  • Supports all major formats .Wav and .mp3 and others.
  • Runs on both PC and Mac OS
  • Great Support team that will answer all your questions.
  • Free Video Tutorials on Their YouTube Channel.

I think my final say about Reason 8 is that it’s really a powerful software but its main downsides are the too-complicated interface and the lack of free tutorials in the web.

If you’re okay with that, then it’s safe to give it a try and see how things will turn out.

You can see my detailed review of Reason 8 here in this post: Reason 8 Review

So, Which Beat Making Software is the best for me?

As I said earlier, the best combination that I totally recommend for beginners is to start with BTV SOLO and then after learning the basic stuff, they can move to FL Studio.

This is what I personally did when I was a beginner myself. And it worked well for me. That’s why I’m sharing that with you and I believe it’s a good strategy to start with.

This plan ensures that you don’t get stuck and get frustrated right from the start just because you chose an overly complicated software. I know by experience that the first days of beat making are the most difficult. All that will come later is super easy.

That’s why I insist on playing it safe when starting out and go with something that is basic and plain simple to use like BTV SOLO. Then, whenever you feel comfortable you can move to a more advanced software such as FL Studio or Cubase or Reason.

I hope that this post has helped you have a broad idea about the best beat makers in the market. Of course there are other programs but the ones mentioned in this post seem to be getting most of the attention in the market.

If you have any questions or if you want to share your experience with any of the mentioned beat makers, you’re welcome to do so in the comments below!

Best Studio Headphones in 2018 For Beat Makers

Best Studio Headphones

One of the essential tools that a beat maker needs is headphones. Normally, I would say that a studio monitor is mandatory whether you have headphones or not.

However, and because most computers’ sound these days is actually pretty good, I think that just having some solid headphones is fairly sufficient.

Just to make things straight here, when I say headphones, I refer to high quality headphones that are made for music producers and sound engineers.

There’s no place here for cheap earbuds. Those will just hurt your ears to the death.

So, avoid them at any cost.

Let’s get right to it.

Based on my experience, the five headphones below are to some extent the best studio headphones in 2018 for beat makers. They provide the best value for your money.

Top 5 Studio Headphones in 2018 for Beat Makers

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones

Let me just say this. Audio Technica headphones are the best in the market. Their products are high quality with very reasonable prices that can convince anyone to buy them.

Their M-series is one of the most successful series of headphones ever. They have been (and still) insanely popular especially among producers and sound engineers.

The ATH M series contains five different versions. I found that there’s two versions that have been the most praised by professional audio reviewers. I’m talking about the ATH-M30x ad the ATH-M50x (the one I currently use).

I would recommend that you go with any of the two versions depending on your budget. If your budget is tights then you can start by purchasing the M30x. However, if you really want to listen to every single detail of your beats then I definitely recommend the M50x which is twice the price of the M30x.

Also, the M40x is also a good choice. It can deliver almost the same quality as the M50x.

Bottom line, all the M-series headphones are worth every penny. You can choose which model to buy based on your available budget.

AKG K 240 Semi-Open Studio Headphones

My second recommendation is got to be an a AKG product. These guys really know what they are doing when it comes to music instruments. They simply rock.

And their K 240 headphones are a great example to prove the greatness of this company. These semi-opent studio headphones provide a remarkable sound quality and a clear high volume that will help you enjoy the full experience of listening to music and making it.

People seem to like these headphones and they prove to be durable and hard to break from constant use. They are simply a great product.

I won’t get into the technical details because you can find all of them on Amazon. Just follow the link below.

Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone

My third favorite headphones are the Sony MDR7506 that provide great sound experience that makes every penny you pay for them totally worth it.

The Neodymium magnets and 40mm drivers allow you to enjoy a perfectly detailed sound that will blow your mind. They are totally comfortable when wearing them. The materials used in making them is top notch which ensures maximum durability.

Just the fact that 78% of the buyers of these headphones have gave it 5 stars on Amazon is enough to tell you how good these headphones are. I totally recommend them.

Brainwavz HM5 Studio Monitor Headphones

Another great headphones that had to be on this list is the outstanding HM5 from Brainwavz.

They may look a little bit ugly to you.

And the brand name make look a little bit suspicious because you’re probably seeing it for the first time. But, that doesn’t mean they are not worth it. Buyers say so.

The HM5 studio monitor headphones are very powerful and can provide clear sound without any problems.

They over the ear kind of headphones which helps you enjoy an isolated neutral sound away from the noise that might be around you.

In short, these headphones are worth considering them before making your final decision

Edifier H840 Audiophile Over-the-ear Noise-Isolating Head

And I’d love to end my list with these amazing headphones that are really powerful no matter how they might look like. They look like an ordinary headphones made for mass but they can be used in beat making without any problems.

The Edifier H840 comes with a 40 mm driver that provide perfect sound in the enclosed ear cups. Their design is elegant with leather headrests for maximum comfort.

They are extremely durable and flexible. Also, you get a 1-year warranty with the product which is always a good thing.

People seem to love them and they got a lot of positive reviews on Amazon that prove how great value-for-money you get when purchasing these headphones.

Before you decide…

I know that the choice of which headphones to buy can be a true headache especially for beginners who are buying their first ever studio headphones. I understand that it’s a big deal for you.

So, I want to make the decision easier for you.

If you know the technical terms and the meanings behind the specs and functionalities of every headphone mentioned in this post, then you’re probably already know which headphones to buy. You won’t have any problems.

On the other hand, if you don’t know a heck about sound terminology or you don’t want to bother yourself learning it, then I would recommend you to stick with one of the Audio-Technica ATH M-series.

All of them can be a good choice however I would advise you to avoid the M20x because is not that powerful for music production purposes.

To sum things up, an M30x will do fine for your home studio. An M40x or M50x will enable you to catch every detail of your music at every step. So, the decision is up to you.
